Hard Water and Your Hair: The Simple Washing Routine That Helps, and Where a Shower Filter Fits

How to tell if your water is hard, six gentle habits for wash day, and an honest look at what a filtered shower head can and can't do for you.

You wash your hair, rinse well, and it still feels dull, heavy or a little rough by the next morning. Then you notice the white crust on your shower head and the spots on the glass, and you start to wonder: is it the water?

It can be part of the story. The good news is that most of what helps is in your hands: how you wash, condition, rinse and dry. This guide walks you through the routine first, then explains where a shower filter fits, and where it doesn't.

Myth: A shower filter turns hard water into soft water.

Fact: Softening means taking calcium and magnesium out of the water, and that's the job of a water softener, a household system. A shower head filter, including ours, isn't a softener.

What "hard water" actually means

Hard water simply has more dissolved calcium and magnesium. The U.S. Geological Survey notes that with hard water, more soap is needed to get things clean, "be it your hands, hair, or your laundry."

It isn't a health hazard, according to the Maryland Geological Survey. It's more of an everyday nuisance, and how hard your water is depends a lot on where you live.

3 ways to tell if your water is hard

  • Look at your shower: white scale on the shower head, faucet or glass.
  • Notice your shampoo: you need more of it to get a good lather and feel clean.
  • Read your water report: in the US, your water supplier sends a yearly water quality report, due each year by July 1. For hardness, your local water utility is the best source.

Utilities often list hardness in mg/L. The USGS calls 0–60 soft, 61–120 moderately hard, 121–180 hard, and over 180 very hard.

What hard water does to hair: the honest answer

Research is still catching up. A 2025 review of nine studies found that more calcium and magnesium settled on hair washed with hard water, and that hard water had a negative effect on how people felt their hair looked and felt. It also found that hard water probably makes hair a little more likely to break, but the authors rated the evidence as moderate at best and called for more real-world studies.

Not every study agrees. One 2013 study found hard water did not change hair's strength or stretch.

And one detail matters a lot. In a 2011 lab study, the condition of the hair, such as damage from chemical treatments, had more influence on how many minerals it picked up than the hardness of the water did. It's one more reason gentle care is worth it.

6 gentle habits for hair in hard water

  1. Shampoo your scalp. Use a gentle shampoo and focus it on your scalp rather than the lengths.
  2. Condition after every wash. Use a moisturizing conditioner after every shampoo.
  3. Wash a little less often. If your scalp feels dry, try spacing out wash days.
  4. Blot, don't rub. Wrap your hair in a towel or a soft t-shirt instead of rubbing it dry.
  5. Comb gently. Use a wide-tooth comb while hair is wet.
  6. Go easy on heat. Limit blow-drying and hot tools, and use a low or medium heat setting when you do.

An occasional clarifying wash

If styling products, oils or creams leave your hair heavy, the AAD suggests a clarifying shampoo before your usual moisturizing shampoo to clear that buildup. Use it now and then, not every wash, and always follow with conditioner.

Many women find their hair changes around menopause. Cleveland Clinic suggests gentle, moisturizing shampoos and, if your scalp is dry, washing a little less often. That fits the routine above.

When to see a doctor

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal, according to the AAD. If you notice sudden or heavy shedding, round bald spots, or a scalp that itches, burns or hurts and doesn't settle, see a board-certified doctor. Those need a proper check, and changing your water or your shower head isn't the answer.

Shower filter or water softener?

If hard water is your biggest concern, a softener is the tool for it. Not sure what a filter can do for your water? Our guide Do Shower Filters Work? sorts the myths from the facts and shows you a simple 10-minute check.

Where a filtered shower head fits

Think of it as one piece of a calm shower routine, not a fix for hard water. The Sima Filtered Shower Head is designed to reduce chlorine, so it makes the most sense if your water report shows chlorine and you notice that smell in a warm shower.

It also makes wash day a little nicer. It has 7 spray modes, from rainfall to massage, so you can pick the spray you like for rinsing. It fits most standard fixed, screw-on shower heads (not handheld shower heads on a hose), and it comes with the cartridge already in place and a wrench. Plan on a fresh cartridge about every 3 months, depending on your water and how much you use it.

Hard water and hair: FAQ

Is hard water bad for your hair?

It can leave minerals on hair and may make it feel dull or rough, but the research is mixed. A gentle wash, conditioner every time and low heat are good places to start.

Does a shower filter soften hard water?

No. Softening means removing calcium and magnesium, which is a water softener's job. A shower filter is designed to reduce chlorine.

How do I find out if my water is hard?

Look for white scale on your fixtures, then check your yearly water quality report or call your local water utility.

How often should I use a clarifying shampoo?

Now and then, when your hair feels heavy with product, not every wash. Follow it with conditioner.
